At the age of 22 he is 5th in the UCI and Swiss Championship. Lucien Leiser, pilot of ProRace Team Monty and future engineer who is in preparation 100% for the season 2017.
Let’s go straight to the basics, what do you think about your past 2016 season?
Regarding the Swiss Competitions I am satisfied. At international level a little less because I dropped to fifth place in the UCI ranking and I finished fourth in the World Championship. The Competition is tougher every year and the slightest mistake can make you lose a place in the competition.
If you had to tell us about an important moment during this season?
My third place at the Albertville World Cup. I was super happy, it showed me that I was always among the best and that the podium was accessible.
An anecdote in particular, a “secret file” to tell us?
At the World Team Championship, I was the last one in the team. I was supposed to make most of the points but I fell to the third obstacle. I only made 40 points and because of that we lost third place.
2016 is the first season of the ProRace team on the M5 “Os”. You are part of the team that has developed and tested the bike. What are your impressions of this racing machine?
First of all, I am very happy to be part of the Monty team. During the competitions I discussed a lot with Ion and Vaclav about the bike, it is a good thing for the development of the bike. I’ve always been comfortable on Monty bikes, especially when I’m on carbon, now I really have the bike in my hand and it would be hard for me to get back on an aluminum bike. I like this bike for its lightness and rigidity.
You are one of the most expected drivers of the pack, how do you see the 2017 season?
I will start with a good winter preparation and try to progress to be at the top at the beginning of the season. I will give the 100% of myself on each competition give me and we will see if the results are there.
Most athletes are superstitious. Do you have crazes, rituals when entering a competition?
Not really, I often feel the pressure before the competitions. I try to focus before the race and I do a good warm-up.
Let’s focus on the coming season, what are your goals? Do some competitions attract more attention than others?
Regarding the Swiss Competitions, I would like to win the Swiss Championship and the Swiss Cup. But, my main goals are International Competitions. I would like to return to the World’s Top 3 and achieve a podium at the World Championship
A question that we have already asked you, have you considered changing to the Trial 26”?
I ride once a year, for the 26-inch Swiss Championship. It’s cool to change discipline for a while but I love the 20-inch too. I first want to get good results in 20 inches. Maybe in a few years I will start in 26, but in any case not yet.
Monty is currently focusing its attention on a new range of tubular trial frame called “Kaizen”; as well as a 26” competition-oriented prototype. What is the opinion of your environment about the comeback of Monty in the Trial?
This are great news, Monty is one of the best known brands in bicycle trial. Everyone is looking forward to the new releases. I myself am glad that Monty innovates by presenting new bikes.
Let’s talk a little more about Manon Basseville outside the Trial. Can you introduce the person in a few lines?
I have studied to be garage mechanic, now I have technically matured which allows me to study at an engineering school. This season I devoted all my time to the trial bike, I was a professional sportsman. It was a good experience, I was able to train thoroughly to test my limits. Now I carry out my civil service (it replaces the military service which is compulsory in Switzerland). I like meeting with my friends and going out with them, and having a good time.
A sportsman in particular with whom you find inspiration in difficult times?
I would say Roger Federer, for his calmness and his ability to be motivated even in situations where he does not have the advantage.
For the last question, a complicated one, if you had to find a slogan to sell us Manon Basseville in a sentence, what would you choose?
I love bikes 🙂
