Vasek Kolar loves basketball, music and good food and tells us that this season will reserve his energies to reach finals giving the best, as the champion he is.
Season 2016 was ok, but I didn’t have enough energy at the end of the season. I was very tired, because I ride both UCI and BIU and we had a lot of national competition. I took part at about 35 competitions. I won BIU Worl Championships. I like riding long and natural sections and I think I showed really good performance there when I won with a big difference. I also won BIU Indoor in Barcelona, it was such a great show with many spectators. Sadly, I didn’t make any finals at UCI World Cup although sometimes it was close. I feel stronger at technical and natural sections which I am missing at the world cups.
Which special moment would you remind the most?
I always enjoy doing shows, I try to add some freestyle and creative tricks to my ride so that’s why I like it. I had so much fun at the beginning of years 2016 and 2017, because I had an opportunity to take part at Indoor competition held by Raul Guttierez in his home town Reinosa. There was almost 3000 spectators. I have great experience with speed trial in Albertville that I won, I had there a great cheerleaders, my friend Tatiana Janíčková and her family, they didn’t give me option to loose 🙂
2016 has been your 1st season riding the M5 «OS », which is your impression about the bike in comparison to the rest of the range?
It is the best bike I have ever had. Geometry is almost perfect for me and it is great bike for both UCI and BIU. I grew up riding bike from Monty, so they really suit me. I have to say, that I like to remember Monty Kamel, it was also great frame, but development goes ahead and bikes are changing according to style and trends of riding.
Are you going to change anything of your training routine for the next season?
My preparation is quite similar as the last winter. Gym, bike, jogging, sprints etc. It is pitty that there are only young riders in my city Blansko so I have to train alone and there is below 0°C during the winter, we can train only when we have some indoor place. Anyway, this year I don’t want to ride as many races as last year to save some energy for the end of the season.
Most athletes are superstitious. What about you? Do you have any ritual before getting started in a competition?
I think that almost every sportsman has his own rituals. I would like to keep mine in the secret. There is more of them, I will tell you one, that I have the same as Ion Areito. I have my “lucky underwear” that I wear every competition.
Focusing on this season, which are your goals? Does any competition attract your attention more than others?
I want to concentrate myself on the biggest events of the year, BIU and UCI World Championships. I am very curious about UCI World Championships in China under the new rules. Almost no one know what to expect. Of course I am looking forward to the competition that are great show with many spectators. I hope that I will get the chance to ride some speed trial during some of the world cups. I am taking part at Dressler Camp, this is one of my favorite events, I will enjoy here a lot of fun, many interesting contests and training. I am sorry about cancelled World Cup in Prague, it was one of the competition that I was really happy about.
Nowadays Monty focuses its attention on a new tubular trial frame called “Kaizen”; and on a 26’’ prototype completely oriented towards competition. Which is your point of view regarding Monty getting back in the Trial world?
I am happy that Monty is back in trial community. I find frame Kaizen very interesting. I made brakeless video on this frame and I love playing with this bike. I am planning to ride some competition on this frame, because it has the same geometry as M5. I am looking forward to try these frame with pro race components even during the competition. I saw the 26″ frame only at the picture and it looks great. I think it will be perfect bike for competition.
Let’s talk a little more about you after hours, outside the Trial. If you could live in any place you want, which one would you choose?
Besides trial I like snowboarding, playing basketball, painting graffiti, listening to music and going to a hiphop/rap concert. I always enjoy watching other sports, shooting videos and spending time with my friends. Where do I want to live? I love Spain and I would like to live there one day. I like its atmosphere and weather.
Would you have any peculiar story, a “top secret file” to tell us about?
When I am done with trial I will play basketball in the NBA for Chicago Bulls J I used to play Basketball when I was 6 yo and I really like this sport.
Which fictional character do you identify the most with and why?
I don´t identify with any fictional character, but people say I look like Arnold Schwarzenegger with bigger biceps 😉
If you could learn to do something new, what would you choose?
Since I was child, I wanted to be able to do one thing. I have to learn how to do a backflip. I want it so long, but I am little bit scared. I would like to jump higher and further too.
Last, but not least, we will make it a bit more complicated. If you would have to find a slogan to sell Vaclav Kolar in one sentence, which one would you choose?
Guy, who loves riding bikes.
